As AIFA, our goal is to have the following governance resolution passed at the 2025 UCP AGM:
Bylaws Article 4 - Membership
4.7. Subject to such minimum periods of membership as may be set out in these Bylaws or
by the Board, every Member is entitled to:
4.7.1. attend, participate in, vote and stand for election to the Board, at any AGM or
SGM upon payment of the prescribed registration fee;
4.7.2. attend, participate in, vote and stand for election to the board of directors
of a Constituency Association in which the Member meets eligibility requirements
pursuant to the Party's rules governing Constituency Associations; and
4.7.3. For the purpose of voting at any level, voters must be a member in good
standing for at least twenty-one (21) days prior to the vote.; and
4.7.4. For the purpose of voting at an AGM or SGM, a Member may either be in
attendance at the meeting or may register for, but need not physically attend,
the meeting.
(subject to amendments before submission)
Sounds easy, right? However, there are some major obstacles in the path to success.
Even prior to the submissions of resolutions to the 2025 PPGC, we need to encourage
as many members as possible to support this resolution in as many ways as possible.
Communicate with CA Boards, ask your UCP MLA to support the resolution, and vote for
the resolution at the PPGC's ranking stage, which will probably be in late summer 2025
(per this year's schedule). After that, attend the 2025 UCP AGM and vote for this
resolution at the Governance Plenary, which has normally been held on the Friday night
of the AGM for the past few years. Unfortunately, this means having to spend money to
attend the AGM but this will save time and money in the long run.
The whole idea about having this Bylaws resolution pass is to avoid having to pay
significant money to attend and vote at the AGM, which members from two or three regions
currently have to do. AIFA is not advocating for free attendance to the AGM; rather,
we're advocating from every attendee to pay the same. We assert that every member
should have some 'skin in the game', but every member should have close to the same amount
of skin in.
